“Cat” is quite a difficult sign in baby sign language. Bibi never actually managed to produce exactly the way we taught her – instead of holding her index fingers and thumbs together while moving her hands outwards to draw whiskas in the air, she would hold all fingers together. Still, she got to use it a lot, especially that sometimes she signed „cat” when she saw a small dog!
It’s interesting this complicated sign got replaced quite early on by speech, though I’m not entirely sure how we ended up with „mimimi”. It then developed into „meaw yeaw” and is currently just „meaw”. Bibi can say many words that are more complicated than „cat” but somehow whenever we ask her if she can say „cat” she smiles and makes the sign, but normally she just says „meaw”.
